Congratulations to Senior badminton player Mabel Bassi on earning Athlete of the Month for March! Mabel plays on the varsity badminton team and tennis team for Walt Whitman and attests her talent to her good hand-eye coordination and agility. Mabel shared “when I play, I feel really happy,” and believes she earned this award for March because her performance level and confidence have escalated since the start of the season. “I’m feeling much more confident than before. I’m always trying to win it and if I don’t, I just smile, move on and try harder.” Mabel is a member of the National Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and the National Music Honor Society as she used to play cello for the orchestra. Mabel chose to put down the cello in order to focus her attention on electives and her other groups she is involved with. She is an active member of Natural Helpers, is secretary for Model UN, and is the poetry editor for Xanadu as she enjoys writing both in and outside of school. As a senior, Mabel is considering Fordham University for pre-law but is keeping her options open. Mabel’s biggest dream is to open a non-profit to help children around the world in need of medical help. As far as her time at Whitman, Mabel appreciates the diversity and ability for everyone to come together as one.
Congratulations to Junior Kevin Martin on earning Athlete of the Month for March! Kevin competes in the 1000 meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter races during the winter and spring track seasons and most recently won his 800 meter race at one of the duel meets this season. Kevin is also on the cross country team and truly considers himself to be a distance runner, stating how “I’ve never been a fast sprinter. Distance comes easier to me even though it can be more of a challenge.” When asked what goes through his mind as he’s running such long distances, he shared “I have to finish the race no matter what. If I fall, I get back up. If I’m in pain, I just keep going.” Each race is an opportunity to go for his personal best and that’s what helps him to come out at the top of the competition. Kevin is a member of the National Business Honor Society, World Language Honor Society, and hopes to be inducted into the National Honor Society this year. He also has a fun time participating in the Corn Hole Club and would say his favorite part about Whitman is the community and all of the different events that go on. “We’re all together and we all unite to get through hardships and overcome challenges together,” he said as he described Whitman to be like a family. “I’m always here to try my best and put in my best effort and I’m willing to help anyone with anything.”
